Getz, Thome, and Pods Propel Sox Win
Chris Getz and Jim Thome returned to the lineup friday night, and the Pale Hose were glad to have them back. Getz, 2-for-5, had the game winning RBI triple, and Thome, 1-for-4, had a cluth two-out bases clearing RBI double, but the unsung hero of the night was Podsednik. Filling in for Brian Anderson who was placed on the DL, Pods made his presence known by legging out an infield single. Taking second on a balk, Getz split the right-center defenders for the game-winning RBI triple.
Buehrle was his workman-like self. He surrendered a leadoff home run to Ian Kinsler, an RBI double to Jones, and a sac-fly to Kinsler, but Buehrle battled the potient Rangers lineup until the Sox were able to get on the board in the sixth. Thome just missed a grand slam, but he had a cluth two-out bases clearing double that switched the momentum to the White Sox. The RBIs gave the slugger 1,501 career runs batted in.
The bullpen came in and shut the door on the Rangers. Dotel, Linebrink, and Jenks, sixth save, preserved the win for Buehrle – his forth win of the season.
It was a great game, and I was glad to see Pods go 2-for-4. He was always a favorite of mine, and I hope he can stay healthy and contribute to the Sox.
Contreras Better, But Sox Still Fall
It was a pitchers duel between Contreras and Halladay, but it was Halladay that perservered in the end. The Sox were able to take the lead off of Konerko’s clutch 2-RBI Double, but Contreras quickly reliquished a run in the 4th to tie the game. It wasn’t until the 8th where the Blue Jays finally broke the tie off of Scott Linebrink. Linebrink took the loss.
It was Contreras’ best outing by far, and he had a solid 3rd inning after struggling the first two. While he did give up three, it was a vast improvement, and he seemed to have better command as the game progressed. Hopefully, this will right the ship for him, and we can see him pitch a little deeper into games. Our bullpen needs a rest.
The Sox had an opportunity in the bottom of the 9th. BA singled to Right-Center, and Alexei came to the plate to be another hero. He hit a fly ball to left to end the game. I am not a fan of free-swingers especially if they hurt the team. I would love to see a little more plate discipline with Alexei. Maybe have him shorten his swing more and drive the ball to right. Waiting for the home run, while exciting, isn’t going to help this team make it to the playoffs. We saw that last year in the Rays vs White Sox ALDS series.
BA raised his average to .325. Konerko still hitting strong. I am disappointed in Thome. While he has hit a few home runs, I would like to see him drive the ball to left to avoid the shift. With Konerko hitting the ball well, it’s better if Thome gets on base rather than grounding out or striking out. His three pitch stikeout yesterday had me swearing like a sailor. Halladay didn’t have his best stuff, and he was hanging breaking balls like christmas stockings over the fireplace.
I wouldn’t mind Ozzie switching up the batting lineup again. I liked it when BA was in right, and JD was hitting DH.
Buehrle Shines, Thome Muscles His 543rd HR
If you are a Sox fan, what would be better as a follow up to Colon’s masterful outing? A solid performance from your Staff Ace, Mark Buehrle. Buehrle pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up a solo home run to Delmon Young, while striking out 5. White Sox continue to get strong pitching from their starters.
The Twins took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Delmon Young smacked a solo shot to left field. The Sox came back in the 5th when PK scored on the error to make it a tie game. The Sox put two on the board in the 6th off of Thome’s home run, and the Sox score another two in the 7th off of Field’s single to right and a sac fly from CQ. Wise had a beautiful sac bunt which he struggled at in previous attempts. Joe Nathan, Twins Closer, gave up a solo shot to JD in the 8th giving the White Sox a 6-1 lead.
Dotel pitched a solid 2/3rds of an inning in the 7th, and Linebrink followed with a good inning himself for the 8th. Linebrink struggled in spring training, so it was good to see him have a decent outing. Clayton Richard came into the 9th, and he quickly put runners on first and second with no outs. He walked Cuddyer on four straight balls, and Ozzie promptly yanked the young left hander for Bobby Jenks. The Twins have this uncanny ability stack a few runs when they have to. Bobby struck out Crede looking on a funky curveball that looked flat and settled in the middle of the plate. Jenks proceded to get Young to hit into a double play that ended the game.
The only speed bump the White Sox had was Richard’s outing. It was a great win, and the Sox take the series 2 games to 1. The Sox head to Detroit on a 10 game roadtrip.
It’s great to see the Sox manufacture some runs outside of the home run. If the Sox continue to do that, they will be a deadly team in the Central with their excellent pitching.
Yankees Put Sox Back in First in the AL Central
After Rivera gave up a three-run homer to Young in the 8th, I thought all was lost, but four innings later the Yankees walked off the field victorious and the Sox were propelled back into first place in the AL Central – which been a yo-yo for the Sox and the Twins these last few weeks. Neither the Sox or the Twins are running away from the division yet, and it may come down to the last series finale between the two teams in MN.
The Sox need to continue to put up wins and let us fans and reporters worry about the scoreboard watching. This has been some exciting baseball around the league, and while I get angry at the Sox – I still come back and watch them. What impressed me the most about last night wasn’t the three home runs, but the five spot they placed in the 8th off of 4 Doubles and a RBI single off from Getz ( his first hit and RBI in the majors ). The Sox need to find ways to win that doesn’t include waiting for the home run. This was a good win, a solid win with good pitching, defense, and timely hitting.
Tonight the Sox sent Buehrle to the mound, and he looks to continue where he left off hist last start. Buehrle dominated the Red Sox lineup, and he will need another good performance, hopefully saving some of the arms in the bullpen.
Thornton came out and said his arm is tired. I figured as much how he pitched Sunday and Monday. I think he needs a few days rest, and I think he will be ready to go in Oakland for the weekend series with the As. I give him props for trying to battle through it, but you do your team no good if you constantly getting behind in the counts. It’s time for some of the new arms in the bullpen to step up and help with the slack.
Linebrink is making progress with his shoulder, but there still isn’t a timetable on when he will return to the bullpen. Seeing how cautious they are being, I do not foresee him back until September.
Crede said the pain in his back is better, and he will see about a rehab session in Triple A this week. The question posed to Ozzie is: if Crede is healthy and back with the team, will he play 3B or will Uribe continue to play there? Uribe started at 2B this year until a hamstring placed him on the DL, and he lost his starting job because of the emergence of Alexei. Will Crede be benched in the same fashion?
Uribe has more versatility because he can play more of the infield so he might be better off the bench, but I think he is playing a better 3B than Crede has all year. I love Crede, but I think his back has finally placed him out of the Sox future. Also, Uribe’s bat has been better these last few weeks.

These last two series are important for the Sox. It’s always good to go into the All-Star Break on a good note. These are going to be two tough series for the Sox. I predict that the Sox will go 2-1 in the series. They should sweep tho.
That wasn’t the best of games I saw, but it sure wasn’t one of the worst. The Sox continue to struggle with runners in scoring position, but what was more alarming was Linebrink’s performance. He blew another save and almost cost the Sox the game. Masset struggled, but he was able induce a Double Play grounder to end the game. You wonder if the Sox performance tonight was attributed to the departure of Ozuna, a clubhouse favorite.
Paulie was 1-4 with an RBI; Ramirez and Thome each had a 4-hit game; and the hero of the game was OC with his RBI double to give the Sox the lead and ultimately the win.
