MacDougal Released

I wasn’t surprised when I heard the news that Mike MacDougal was released by the White Sox.  After having a good Spring Training, MacDougal struggled to find his control at the beginning of the season.  Ozzie lost faith in him, and that was all she wrote for MacDougal.

I wish him well.  He has unbelievable stuff, and when he regains his confidence in his pitches, he will be a force to be reckoned with.

Broadway Called Up, Egbert Sent to Triple-A

After his horrible performance Friday against the Blue Jays, Egbert was sent back to Triple-A.  The White Sox recalled Lance Broadway and added them to the 40-man roster.  A few fans were scratching their heads when Egbert was called up after MacDougal was placed DFA.  Hopefully, Broadway will fair better than Egbert did.

Ground Control to Major Contreras

The outcome of the Sox game last night wasn’t a shocker for me.  I expected Contreras to continue to struggle with his control, and he let a winnable game get out of hand by not throwing strikes.  There wasn’t a lot of highlights if you were a Sox fan.

Jack Egbert made his major league debut, and he was greeted with a two-run homer from Audbrey Huff.  Egbert replaced MacDougal in the bullpen.  MacDougal was DFA on Tuesday.  I cannot say I was entirely impressed with his outing, but it was a crappy nigh for the Sox.

I think we are stuck with Contreras for the time being.  We are still competitive in the AL Central.  Once Contreras becomes a liability, I would think he would be placed into the bullpen and maybe pawned off before the trade deadline in July.  Kenny tried to dump him a few times, but no one wanted to pick him up.  I am a Contreras fan, and I want him to figure it out.  I do not think he has a lot of time because the AL Central is so competive.

The Royals are playing supremely well, and they look to be a solid contender with their starting pitching and lights out closer.  Crisp made that team hundred percent better, and I think he will make that team even better once the weather warms up.

I wouldn’t be opposed having Contreras in the bullpen to find his control, but we do not have a lot of choices to replace him on the starting rotation.  Richard has looked hit or miss.  Some outings he is good, and there are times in which I wonder if he knows what a strike really is.

MacDougal DFA

According to www.whitesox.com, Mike MacDougal was DFA today prior to the game with Baltimore.

It’s an unfortunate move, but it’s a move that needed to be made.  While Egbert isn’t a better replacement for MacDougal, I felt that the Sox organization gave MacDougal enough chances to prove himself as the dominate pitcher he was a few years ago.  He wasn’t able to re-produce the magic of his 2006 season.

I wish MacDougal well, and I hope a change of scenery will do him good.

Bullpen Cannot Hold Lead, Sox Lose

Colon left the 6th with a 5-2 lead.  Once the frame was over, the Rays took the lead 6-5.  Matt Thornton gave up a grand slam to put the Rays on top, and the White Sox couldn’t capitalize on opportunities again.

The Sox took an early 2-0 lead, but the Rays came back and cut the lead in half.  The Sox took a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the 6th, but a win wasn’t in the cards for the Pale Hose.

It was an unfortunate loss.  When Thornton loses his command like that, it is usually a sign that his arm was overworked.  Linebrink was up to pitch, but he promptly sat down and MacDougal took his place.  He walked one and was pulled for Clayton Richard.

Hopefully the Sox can bounce back tomorrow for the win.  Buerhle is on the mound.

MacDougal Struggles in Detriot

I guess it’s a love affair with Mike MacDougal.  The talented right hander has stuff that makes any manager go gah-gah.  I was very learly when MacDougal made the roster this year.  I felt he needed to prove something to me.  I just didn’t see the MacDougal of 2006 in Spring Training.  I am sure MacDougal has a short leach on him, but I have a feeling we will be seeing him sent back down to AAA or dangled for trade bait.  Then again, with the way he is pitching, what team would want him.  Cooper has been masterful with many pitchers, so it has to be something that MacDougal needs to figure out for himself.

The question is – who in AAA could replace him?  No one really stands out.  I like Mike, but he needs to get it together and soon.  Tampa Bay is next, and I don’t want another repeat of Boone Logan from last year.  MacDougal has the talent.  He just needs to bring all together.  Lets hope for the best.

Colon Outstanding, White Sox Bats Thump Twins

122924_Twins_White_Sox_Baseball.jpgAfter the disappointing loss Friday night, the White Sox responded with masterful pitching, plate discipline, and timely hitting.  Bartolo Colon looked great in his 6 innings of work with 2 walks and 2 strike outs.  He limited the Twins to 3 hits.  Colon was in his Cy Young form that baseball hasn’t seen in a few years.

The bullpen came in and completed the shutout.  Dotel struggled a little with two walks, but Matt Thornton got them out of the inning.  MacDougal pitched 2 innings with 2 walks, 1 strike out, and gave up a hit.  He wasn’t great, but he pitched well enough to get out of some tight situations.

The hero of the game is plate discipline.  Sox batters coaxed 2 walks with the bases loaded against Liriano.  Liriano exited the game in the 4th while giving up 5 runs.  He struggled the second time through the Sox lineup, and I can see why he is 0-2 with a high ERA.

Alexei managed his first two hits of the season and 2 RBIs.  Anderson managed his first hit of the season as well.  CQ continued to see the ball well and hit a solo home run in the 7th that started a three-run rally.

Wise looked better at the plate, and Corky Miller had a superb game on both sides of the plate.  He had two hits, two RBIs.  Still waiting for AJ to get hot.  Lillibridge looked decent in the leadoff role – two walks, sacrifice bunt.

The White Sox were 5 of 12 with runners in scoring position.

It was a game the Sox really needed to break their three game losing streak.
