White Sox Trade Broadway to Mets for Catcher Castro
This trade was kinda of a head scratcher for me. While Corky Miller was OK, I didn’t feel the need to go out and pick up a backup catcher. Broadway has been decent for the White Sox, but he didn’t step up in big situations.
White Sox pitchers do a terrible job of holding runners, so to use that Miller was only 1-for-9 for tossing out runners is horse pucky. AJ isn’t any better. But, the knock that Miller got was his batting average. He only managed to be in the low two hundreds, and I think the Sox looked for a little more run production from their anemic offense. Ozzie wants to use Castro more coming into the summer to keep AJ fresh for a push in September.
I don’t see Castro as a huge upgrade to be honest, and I think Williams traded away a decent trade bait pitcher for little return. I hope I am wrong tho. Time will tell.
Ozzie Benches Ramirez, Nix Starts at SS
According to www.whitesox.com, Nix Starts at SS
I cannot say that I am shocked that Nix will start at SS. He had a good spring training, and he had a very good debut game after his stint on the DL. Alexei has struggled to find his swing, and there hasn’t been any improvement from game to game. You see glimpses of him reading to right the ship, but the next game he is back to swinging at pitches out of the zone, swinging too early, or looking uncomfortable at the plate.
I do not know if Nix has what it takes to play every day, but he is a better option than Brent Lillibridge.
With this move, I assume that Contreras is on the hot seat. He might get demoted if he doesn’t have a good start next outing. There isn’t a good option to replace him in the rotation. Richard hasn’t been stellar, and Broadway hasn’t been a head-turner either. It’s a difficult situation for Ozzie and Kenny. They might opt to look for one of the free agent pitchers that is still on the market. A decision needs to be made soon before they sink more in the standings to the Tigers and Royals.
Broadway Called Up, Egbert Sent to Triple-A
After his horrible performance Friday against the Blue Jays, Egbert was sent back to Triple-A. The White Sox recalled Lance Broadway and added them to the 40-man roster. A few fans were scratching their heads when Egbert was called up after MacDougal was placed DFA. Hopefully, Broadway will fair better than Egbert did.
Broadway Called Up, Getz Sent Down
After the completion of the suspended game, the White Sox optioned Getz down to Triple A and recalled Broadway back to the roster.
I thought Getz did a good job when he was called up, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he was called up again in September when the roster is expanded.
Broadway Sent Back to Triple A, Richard Likely to Join Team in Oakland
After Broadway won Thursday afternoon, Ozzie called him into his office to break the news that he was going back to Triple A. The Sox needed bullpen help, and Broadway understood the decision. Rumor has it that Clayton Richard will be recalled.
Broadway, Sox Offense Show How Sweeps Are Done
Lance Broadway walked away as a winner today. If the first inning was any indication of how the game was going to end, it didn’t look that good for the Pale Hose. Broadway turned it around, and he pitched 5 1/3 innings to be eligible for the win. The bullpen came in and pretty much slammed the door on the Royals. Russell pitched two impressive innings retiring all six batters, four via the strikeout.
With the Sox clinging to a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the 6th, the offense finally took over by placing two men on for the always dangerous Jim Thome. Thome lauched his 25th homer of the year, but the offense still had something to say. Paulie, who botched a sure out to score two runs for the Royals, started to click at the plate. He felt a little left out of the offense and hit a home run to LF. Alexei stepped up to the plate, and he didn’t want to walk alway empty handed and hit a home run. The Royals bring a new pitcher for Uribe – who hasn’t hit a home run since May 8th – to connect for his 4th home run of the year. It was back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs for the Sox, and they cruised to a 9-2 win and completed the sweep – their first of the second half if I recall.
This was a statement game. After a rough first inning, the Sox regrouped nicely and took it to the Royals. Griffey, batting 2nd, was 1-2 with two walks and a run scored. Quentin was hit again for the 6th game in a row. JD, who continues to be clutch, and is the MVP of the Sox this year, hit a two run double. The man of the hour was Paulie who went 3-5 with two singles and a home run. He raised his average to .226 and has been doing an okay job at the plate. I really hope this sparks Paulie. I think most people can forget his start with a strong finish. Remember it’s how you finish!
I liked Griffey batting 2nd. He looked more comfortable batting there than 5th,6th, or 7th.
Sox Look to Sweep Royals Under the Rug
Lance Broadway will get the nod tomorrow to
look for the sweep.
Buehrle Cruises to Win; Sox Pitch Back-to-Back Shutouts
Buehrle continued where he left off from his last start, and he dominated the Royals lineup for his 10th win of the season. The Sox win back-to-back shutouts, and they look for the sweep tomorrow behind Lance Broadway and the first place White Sox.
Uribe’s defense has been spectacular at 3rd and tonight was no different. He made an awesome pick from a sharp grounder off the bat of Butler.
Griffey made a nice diving catch in CF and added an RBI single in the first.
JD continues to get the job done with a RBI double which was set up with AJ’s sac bunt. Situational hitting. Gotta love it!
The night goes Buehrle. The Sox Starters have really picked it up these last few games, and I hope we can go on a nice run.
Getz had a nice hit-and-run in the 5th which set up another run for the Sox. This kid looks solid so far, and I look forward to see more of him in the future.
Paulie has been getting it done as of late; two walks and a RBI single plating AJ.
Another solid win for the pale hose, and lets go get them tomorrow!
Go Sox!
–
Twins won today on Young’s three-run blast; his second in two days. The Sox and Twins are in a virtual tie for first place pending tonight’s outcome.
–
Buehrle on the mound for the Pale Hose.
Tonight’s lineup:
1. OC, SS
2. AJ, C
3. JD, RF
4. Thome, DH
5. Paulie, 1B
6. Griffey, CF
7. Swisher, LF
8. Uribe, 3B
9. Getz, 2B
Getz gets his first MLB start. He had his first hit and RBI last night against the Royals PHing for Ramirez in the 8th. Quentin is out again for general soreness. He is expected to return to the lineup tomorrow.
Roster Moves for the Sox
Boone Logan and Josh Fields were sent down Triple A, and Lance Broadway and Chris Getz were called up. Logan struggled for most of the second half, and I am surprised they waited this long to send him down. The Sox sign Horacio Ramirez to fill in for the bullpen. Fields was a disappointment; his defense was terrible, and his offense wasn’t that much better.
This is Broadways’ second call up while the first for Getz. Getz impressed a lot of the staff in spring training. Looking forward to see what he can do for the Sox.
Dotel Pitches Out of Jam; Sox Homer Back to First
While Gavin Floyd didn’t have his best stuff, but it was good enough for a win today. Leaving the 6th with one out, Thornton loaded the bases. Dotel came in relief, and got Mike Lowell to ground into an inning ending double play – saving the game for the Sox and maybe the season. It was a key game for the Sox, especially with Contreras going down the day before.
After being down 3-0, the Sox got on the board first with a solo shot from JD, but that was only the beginning. The Sox managed two two-run homers from Quentin and Thome, giving the Sox the lead 5-3. The Sox scored an insurance run making it 6-3, but Boston wasn’t out of the game yet. They managed to score two runs which lead to Dotel entering the game. Amazing.
It wasn’t the best placed game with errors on both sides, but it was a win. With the Twins losing in extras to the Royals, the White Sox climb back into first place of the AL Central.
