Disappointing Homestand

I’ve been at a loss of words for the past week thanks to the performance of the Chicago White Sox.  They started their homestand in grand fashion, but they proceeded to lose the next three games to the Oakland A’s.  While it was a head scratcher, we still had to focus for the Indians were coming into town.  With division games, you simply have to win as much as you can, and the White Sox failed to do that.  There are three phases to baseball: pitching, offense, and defense.  The White Sox lacked most of those phases in their series with the A’s, Indians, and Tigers.  While the pitching was better in the Tigers series, it wasn’t good enough to overcome the errors of the defense or the lack of offense.

While the Sox walked away from the Tigers series losing three out of the five games.  They had opportunities to win every game.  I always believed that good teams overcome errors or bad calls from the umpire, and the Sox aren’t a good time currently.  They cannot align all three phases into a game, and they are suffering because of it.

Offensively, situational hitting is killing the Sox.  The last team the Sox had in which they could execute effectively was 2006.  Alexei isn’t a batter that should be in the second spot.  He started out well because he was seeing a lot of fastballs, but when pitchers started going offspeed and outside the strikezone, Alexei was doing all the work to get him out.  Last year, Alexei was one of the best, or the best clutch, hitter the Sox have seen since Crede, but Alexei has only shone lukewarm highlights of his breakout rookie year last year.  Ozzie benched him for a few games at the beginning of the season for Jayson Nix, and it helped awhile with him sitting back on the breaking ball, but it hasn’t improved his clutch hitting or situational hitting in key moments.  His sacrifice bunting skills are pretty terrible, and he is prone to popping out instead of moving the runner.

I knew that Gordon Beckham would be making his debut in a Sox uniform, but I expected that to happen after the All-Star break.  With the departure of Wilson Betemit, I thought that would give more playing time for Jayson Nix.  Ozzie and Kenny thought that Beckham was ready, and they called him up leaving Fields’ status with the team in jeporady.  They weren’t going to call up Beckham to sit on the bench, so I assume that Kenny would be using Fields as trade bait.  Unfortunately, Fields doesn’t have a lot of value because he is prone to striking out a lot and he doesn’t have a strong glove and gives up big errors in key situations of a game.  The callup of Beckham hasn’t been as hopeful as some might have thought.  Beckham might be an answer to part of the problem, but he isn’t the answer to all of their problems.  Looking at Beckham’s approach to the plate, it seems that he just hacks at the first pitch.  There was one game in which he saw a total of three pitches in the game.  Beckham needs to calm down at the plate and work the count a little.  While there were some pitches that he drived well, start with the little things like singles before swinging for the fences.  The Sox have enough thumpers in the lineup.

There are many more issues with the offense, but I want to get to pitching.  Starting pitching has been blah.  Either we have great starting pitching or it’s been medicore at best.  In games in which you think you have a shot at winning, you watch the starters begin to fade and the bullpen is rushed onto the field to make matters worse.  I do not think Ozzie has been managing his starting pitching every well this last homestand.  He left Buehrle too long in the Tiger series, and it cost him a win.  I understand the desire to save your bullpen, but being down in the standings as you are, you have to treat each game as if it is the final game of the World Series.  I hate to see what would have happened if the Sox lost the last game of the Tiger’s series after Bobby gave up the two run homer to Granderson in the top of the ninth.  The team looked flat as it was, and losing that game would most likely have been a death sentence.

Linebrink and Dotel have struggled during the homestand.  Giving up big runs when they are called upon to hold games.  Carrasco has been one of the bright shining lights in the bullpen this year, but you are going to get to a point in which you go to the well a little too much.  I think the woes of the offense and the defense has effected the pitching.  Pitchers aren’t confident in overcoming errors or lack of offense.  Danks pitched a whale of a ballgame, but he walked away the empty in his effort.  Gavin Floyd was spectacular in his outing only to see a no decision because Jenks gave up a big two run homer.  The only starting pitcher that notched a win in the Tiger’s series was Contreras – who looked amazing in his first start since being sent down to the minors.  If Contreras can duplicate his outing, we would be in decent shape because we can bench Colon – he is on DL currently.  Colon has been a huge disappointment.  One outing he is amazing, and the second outing he looks terrible.  While you can have a little patience with Floyd and Danks, you expect more from your veterans.  What has been killing the bullpen has been walks.  Starters and Relief alike have been prone to walking alot of batters in a game – especially the leadoff hitter.  Holding runners at first has been a challenge, and it has plagued the pitching staff for the last few years.

Last phase is defense, and the Sox haven’t been a strong defensive team this year.  Those big errors have cost a lot of games for the White Sox this season.  Because of his lack of defense and production at the plate, Wilson Betemit was DFA, and you have a feeling that Fields isn’t that far behind.  Because of the injury to Konerko with his thumb, Fields has been playing a few games at first base.  Still, Fields defense hasn’t been spectacular even though he worked with Joey Cora in the offseason.  Along with his subpar defense, his hitting hasn’t been any better.  He has a high strikeout ratio, and isn’t prone to hitting in clutch.  Then again, you could say that about a lot of the Sox players.  Another player with error issues has been Alexei.  You would think with his talent, he would be more sure handed, but it hasn’t been the case for the young shortstop this season.  Giving extra outs to any team is a recipe for disaster.  Pitching hasn’t been strong enough to simply overcome those errors this year.

I do not see the Sox going far this season unless they can turn around their pitching, hitting, and defense.  With the way that the Tigers are playing, we are going to be hard pressed to make any ground whatsoever.  We had a good opportunity to make a dent in the standings, but we let three games slip through our fingers.  I see the Sox as sellers soon if they have a bad road trip with interleague play.  Most likely you will see JD, Fields, possibly Contreras if he pitches well, Buehrle – his contract value goes up if he is traded I recall, Thome is another possibility – some teams are looking for bats.  While it might be a little early to sound negative, but the Sox really hasn’t shown us something to really cheer about this last homestand – especially against teams in our own division.  I hope they turn it around because I hate to see them lose the way they have been.  You will lose games.  It’s the nature of the schedule, but to lose the games as they have been… it’s simply an embarassment to the fans, to the organization, and to themselves as ballplayers.

Crede Welcomes Chicago Fans With a Solo Shot

Crede, the beloved third baseman for the Sox for nine seasons, hit a solo home run in the top of the second off of Contreras.

Sox Lose Suspended Game; Tied for First in the Central

crede_return.jpg

When is Ozzie going to learn he cannot stretch his bullpen?  Ramirez gave up two singles and a sac bunt before Ozzie pulled him for Carrasco.  DJ quickly got behind 2-0 before giving up the go-ahead run for the Os.  I realize you do not want to blow your bullpen, but come on, trying to stretch Ramirez for  three innings was pretty far fetched.

Sox are down to their last three outs with PK, AJ, and Quentin.  Lets hope that Paulie can make some late inning magic as he did yesterday.  And, Paulie gets the Sox going with a leadoff walk, so the magic continues for PK.  Will Ozzie bunt him over with AJ or put PK in motion?  AJ is a candidate for the DP, and I don’t want to kill the momentum with PK’s walk.

AJ tries to bunt twice and fail.  This is the second time this week that a Sox batter was asked to bunt and failed to get it down.  I think Ozzie needs to have another instructional meeting about the fundamentals of bunting.  It doesn’t matter because AJ strikes out.

CQ is up to bat, and he can win this game with one swing of the bat.  BUT, getting the runs first to third is good as well for Joe Crede.  CQ singles to CF, and we have runners at first and second.  Getz was PRing for Paulie.

Joe Joe is up, and this will be a huge at-bat for the Sox 3B.   Hopefully he will not try to do too much.  A single to RF could tie the game.  He tried to go to RF, but he lined out.  Two Outs, and Griffey is coming in as a PH.

Griffey, who had a big hit for the Sox yesterday, looks to continue his late inning heroics for the Sox.  This will be another huge hit for the veteran slugger.  Wild Pitch, and we have the tying run 90ft away.   Nothing is as exciting as a walk-off, but it will not happen with Griffey.  The O’s IBB him, and we have the bases loaded for Juan Uribe.  JD comes to PH for Uribe.

JD is given a chance to be a late inning hero now for the Sox. No luck.  JD pops out, and the Sox lose 4-3.  Nice way to start this road trip.

What is with the Sox and bunting?  It seems everytime a bunt is called we cannot execute and one of two things happen: 1) batter strikes out or 2) batter pops out.

With the loss, the Sox are tied for first place with the Twins.  The question remains: will we need the bullpen tonight.  Richard is pitching, and he hasn’t been stellar on the road.  If he gets into trouble early, who is Ozzie going to call on for middle relief?

Batting Order from Suspended Game: Due up in the bottom half of the inning: CQ, Crede, and BA.  I wonder if Ozzie will sub Griffey for BA when he comes up to bat.

1. CQ, LF

2. Joe Joe, 3B ( Welcome Back )

3. BA, CF

4. Uribe, 2B

5. Swish, RF

6. OC, SS

7. Thome, DH

8. PK, 1B,

9. AJ, C

H. Ramirez pitching since Linebrink is on the DL.

Crede Back in Lineup

According to the Tribune, Joe Crede is back in the lineup

I am a huge Crede fan, but with the way that Uribe has been playing, I find this move pretty odd.  Crede wasn’t hitting that well in his rehab assignment.  Crede replaces Wise, went on the DL today, on the roster.  The Sox listed Ramirez as the starting pitcher for tonight’s suspended game.

Ramirez hasn’t pitched very well for the Sox, and I am kinda scared we are sending him out to pitch against the Os 4th, 5th, and 6th batters.

Yankees Put Sox Back in First in the AL Central

After Rivera gave up a three-run homer to Young in the 8th, I thought all was lost, but four innings later the Yankees walked off the field victorious and the Sox were propelled back into first place in the AL Central – which been a yo-yo for the Sox and the Twins these last few weeks.  Neither the Sox or the Twins are running away from the division yet, and it may come down to the last series finale between the two teams in MN.

The Sox need to continue to put up wins and let us fans and reporters worry about the scoreboard watching.  This has been some exciting baseball around the league, and while I get angry at the Sox – I still come back and watch them.  What impressed me the most about last night wasn’t the three home runs, but the five spot they placed in the 8th off of 4 Doubles and a RBI single off from Getz ( his first hit and RBI in the majors ).  The Sox need to find ways to win that doesn’t include waiting for the home run.  This was a good win, a solid win with good pitching, defense, and timely hitting.

Tonight the Sox sent Buehrle to the mound, and he looks to continue where he left off hist last start.  Buehrle dominated the Red Sox lineup, and he will need another good performance, hopefully saving some of the arms in the bullpen.

Thornton came out and said his arm is tired.  I figured as much how he pitched Sunday and Monday.  I think he needs a few days rest, and I think he will be ready to go in Oakland for the weekend series with the As.  I give him props for trying to battle through it, but you do your team no good if you constantly getting behind in the counts.  It’s time for some of the new arms in the bullpen to step up and help with the slack.

Linebrink is making progress with his shoulder, but there still isn’t a timetable on when he will return to the bullpen.  Seeing how cautious they are being, I do not foresee him back until September.

Crede said the pain in his back is better, and he will see about a rehab session in Triple A this week.  The question posed to Ozzie is:  if Crede is healthy and back with the team, will he play 3B or will Uribe continue to play there?  Uribe started at 2B this year until a hamstring placed him on the DL, and he lost his starting job because of the emergence of Alexei.  Will Crede be benched in the same fashion?

Uribe has more versatility because he can play more of the infield so he might be better off the bench, but I think he is playing a better 3B than Crede has all year.  I love Crede, but I think his back has finally placed him out of the Sox future.  Also, Uribe’s bat has been better these last few weeks.

Swisher Is So So Sweet! Sox Come Back to Win in Extras

What an amazing game tonight?  I think my chest was going to burst.  I had a feeling that the Sox going to win this one, but when Polanco hit the two run home run, my faith in the Sox was still strong.  I knew if we could get baserunners we would have chance to win the game.  We got a huge break with the Renteria error which placed runners at first and third with only one out.  I wanted Thome to get a Sac Fly, but he went down swinging only to give way to the dramatic home run by Dirty 30, Nick Swisher.

The bullpen did great, and it was sad to see Thornton give up the two run home run, but I thought he really pitched well besides that.  It was good to see the bullpen hold the Tigers as long as they did.

Props has to go to Uribe.  Who most likely will be lost in the craziness of Swish’s home run, but his defense was outstanding tonight.  Along with the bullpen holding off the Tigers, Uribe did it with his glove.

I was so happy to see Paulie get some better at bats, and I thought his home run was a good momentum changer for the Sox.  It put the game close with the Sox only down by two at that point.

Jr had his first hit at Comiskey, going 1-6 with three Ks.

Welcome back to Chicago Farnsworth.  Ramirez greeted you with a home run.

Tonight’s lineup:

1. OC, SS
2. AJ, C
3. CQ, LF
4. JD, RF
5. Thome, DH
6. Paulie, 1B
7. The Kid, CF
8. Ramirez, 2B
9. Uribe, 3B

Uribe gets the nod over Fields.  Crede had a set back in his rehab session in Triple A.  Paulie in the lineup tonight.

The Sox send Floyd to the mound who has done well versus the Tigers, having a 3-0 record.  The Sox are looking to Floyd to help them distance themselves from the Twinkies.  The Twins lost last night, giving the Sox and the Twins a virtual tie for first for the AL Central.

Tonight will also mark the debut of Ken Griffey Jr at Comiskey Park.  Look for a big crowd on hand for tonight’s game.  Jr is hitting over a 400 clip since being a Sox with 2 RBIs.

Buehrle, Sox Offense Fantastic

Buehrle, pitching on short rest to attend his Grandfather’s funeral, pitched a dominate game last night.  He gave up only one run in 7 1/3 innings, and he was greeted with a standing ovation as he left the field last night.  I was glad Buehrle pitched very well when he had other things more important on his mind.  The Sox bats came out and really gave support to Buehrle, and the Sox cruised to a 10-2 win to even the series.

Crede was scratched with a sore back, and will most likely be given the day off on Wednesday.  Uribe stepped in and contributed to two doubles.  It was good to see Uribe some playing time and he made the most of it.  Alexei hit his first career Grand Slam.  Dye continues to play extremely well.  He is the MVP of the team, and it still burns me that he was passed on the All-Star Game.  Dye has stepped up a lot and shouldered a lot of players who have been slumping.  If he continues on this pace, he has to get a nod for AL Player of the Year Awards.

Game #1: White Sox vs Rays

Danks pitched a great game, and he got early run support from Carlos Quentin and Jim Thome.  Paulie and Crede hit solo home runs, and the Sox take game one with the final score of 5-1.

It was great to see Paulie get started.  He was 2-4, and getting Thome and Konerko hitting will relieve the pressure on Quentin and Dye.  Crede had a HR and walk.  Only blemish Crede had was the error on the throw.  I loved seeing Thome hitting to LF with his RBI Double which was just out of the reach of Crawford.  Quentin continues his amazing season going 2-5 with a RBI single and run scored.

The bullpen came in and continued to dominate.  They haven’t given up a run in 25 innings pitched.  You can slowly see flashes of the ’05 season.

Great win tonight to start this tough four game series.

Game #1: Extra Innings at the Jake

With clutch hitting by Orlando Cabrera the White Sox won 6-3 in extra innings Monday night at the Jake, err Progressive Field.

The Sox struck first with a RBI groundout by Thome in the 1st, but Javvy’s command wasn’t as sharp as we seen it.  Javvy gave up two solo home runs and a RBI single, but he kept the Sox close for Thome and AJ to hit a solo home run and a RBI single to tie the game.  Javvy pitched 6 innings, giving up two walks while striking out two.

Dotel pitched 1 2/3 of an inning, but when I saw Dotel come out for the second inning, I screamed at the tv.  It seems everytime that Ozzie tries to stretch Dotel more than one inning, Dotel gets himself in trouble.  That was no different from last night.  Matt Thornton was brought in to retire Sizemore.

Linebrink pitched a flawless inning.

Masset struggled with his command by walking two batters.

Logan pitched an impressive 1 1/3 innings to hand the ball to Bobby Jenks to close out for the win.  Bobby gave up two singles, but Jhonny Peralta hit into a double play, and struck out Franklin Gutierrez.

Brian Anderson continues to impress me.  He battled back from a 0-2 count to rip a RBI Double down the RF line.  He entered the game as a PR-DH for Thome.

Ramirez had a two-hit game, but he failed to execute a hit-and-run in which Crede was tossed out.  Ramirez was asked to bunt over the runner in the 12th, but he pulled the bunt back and laced a single to RF, placing runners at first and third with no outs for Orlando Cabrera.  I want to see more multi-hit games from Ramirez.  With his speed, we can apply more pressure on the opponent’s pitching.

OC has stepped up in the last few games.  It looks like he is finally getting comfortable with his new role and team.  I am excited to see if he can continue.

Paulie looked better after a few days rest with pain in his hand.  It seems his timing is just a little off.  He was hitting the ball decent and quite possibly missed hitting two home runs.  I think Paulie will have a big few weeks in which we need.  Our 4-5-6 hitters haven’t produced a lot in the last two series, and I would love to see Dye-Thome-Konerko get on track.  I think Crede has been placing too much pressure on himself to produce.  Once those guys get going, I am sure Crede will follow suit.

Observations, Game #1: White Sox vs Angels

Here are some observations I’ve made while attending the first two games ( I have tickets for all four games ) of the Angels series in Anaheim.

Game #1:

OC had a standing ovation when he received his Golden Glove.  Angels fans welcomed back their beloved SS at every at-bat.  Which was totally different for AJ.  Angels fans cannot get past the dropped third strike still.  Their boos get worse every year, and I have attended Sox vs Angels games in Anaheim since ’05.

Buehrle wasn’t at his sharpest.  His fastball topped out at 86mph.  I realize that Buehrle is a contact pictcher, but after the Crede error, I would have pulled Buehrle for another pitcher.

One-out, Angels have runners at first and second, and Buehrle pitched to Vlad, who is a Sox killer.  I sat there when Vlad was coming to the plate saying that Buehrle should walk him.  Hunter wasn’t hitting the ball well off of Buehrle and would have been a better Double Play candidate than Vlad would have.

Wassermann and Logan.  Both pitchers have been struggling, so why bring them into a situation where the game win still attainable?  If the bullpen did it’s job and held the Angels to six runs, we could have won that game.

I would have had a PR for Thome in the 9th.  Granted, you already put Ozuna and Ramirez into the game.  I felt if we had a little more speed, we could have scored another run possibly.

Some positives I saw from Game #1:  I liked how the Sox fought back for the Angels to bring in K-Rod in the 9th. Dotel and Thornton were able to hold the Angels to only 10 runs and pitched well.
